We at NLP are excited to present two previously untranslated documents from the Centro de Autoeducación Obrera – José Carlos Mariátegui. The Centro de Autoeducación Obrera – José Carlos Mariátegui (Workers’ Self-Education Center – José Carlos Mariátegui), was a generated organism of the Communist Party of Peru during the 1970s-1990s period focused on revolutionary theoretical, educational, and agitation/propaganda work within and for the Peruvian labor movement.
It took as its slogan “For a Class-Conscious Labor Line” (Por una Linea Sindical Clasista) and was the theoretical compliment to the PCP’s practical center in the Peruvian trade union movement, the Movimiento de Obreros y Trabajadores Clasistas (Movement of Class-Conscious Laborers and Workers).
The two articles in question we have translated are 1) a short declaration of principles and goals published in 1973 and 2) a longer text entitled The Current Political Situation and the Tasks of the Proletariat focused on providing an analysis of the contemporary Peruvian mass movement and proposing a class line, set of principles, and program of struggle based on that analysis. In particular these texts are also interesting insofar as they were written many years prior to the initiation of armed struggle by the PCP, and thus correspond more closely to a subjective political situation mirroring our own, in which a Communist Party has yet to be fully reconstituted.
